The Workshops Program:

The Al-Ma’mal Workshops Program was developed in 1998 with the main purpose of providing individuals from the Jerusalem community and vicinity with the opportunity to engage in creative practice designed to encourage self-expression. Beginning with photography workshops, we later diversified the program to encompass advanced art workshops and introductory film workshops as well.

The prime motivating factor for having instigated an art project (such as the art and photography workshops) that would involve our immediate community was, in fact, the response to need: youth and young adults who have been affected emotionally and psychologically by the current political situation in the region need to be provided with a positive creative outlet in order to restore self-confidence and experimentation, intrinsic to human experience. The workshops teach participants to express themselves more effectively regarding issues of concern to them, their peers and their community in general, developing their overall aesthetic awareness and appreciation to their surrounding.

The workshops program demonstrates our ongoing effort to connect and collaborate with institutions and individuals at the local, regional and international levels. Our workshops are organized in partnership with community centers, youth clubs and educational institutions and in collaboration with local and foreign artists. We engage participants in activities that stimulate their senses and introduce them to a wide range of materials and media by providing them with opportunities to be engaged in art and express themselves through the different media - painting, drawing, photography, video, sculpture etc. We believe that through the articulation of youth’s creative energies manifesting itself in the process of producing art and documenting it, confidence, courage, understanding and hope can be generated, which is empirically necessary for them to fulfill their potential. The program therefore not only introduces visual art to participants, but it also allows art’s positive energy to touch their lives; creating an environment conducive for group interaction, cooperation, mutual understanding, and tolerance.

Our networking efforts enabled us to establish strong collaboration with a number of local institutions, these are: • A.M.-Qattan Foundation, Ramallah • Burj Al-Laqlaq community center, Jerusalem • Spafford Children's center, Jerusalem • Coptic School, Jerusalem • College Des Freres, Jerusalem • African Community Society, Jerusalem

• The Arab Orthodox Club, Jerusalem • Old City Youth Club • Mount Of Olives Youth Club • Shufat Camp Women’s Center • Silwan Youth Club • YMCA, East Jerusalem.
